The opportunity

City of San Diego partnered with JPW to create an interactive strategic plan microsite to maintain the City’s commitment to transparency and accountability. The goal was to keep residents updated on different areas of the strategic plan progress over time such as advancing mobility infrastructure or tracking police and fire response.

The approach

When it comes to websites, JPW always puts the user first. Therefore, we collaborated with the client to better understand the goals of the website and its specific audience. Once user personas were established, JPW created a custom site map and user flow based on those two elements.

Learning from their current site, we took this custom redesign as an opportunity to better tell the story of the strategic dashboard by showcasing the features and benefits and creating user relatability through bold brand colors, beautiful imagery, and an easy-to-use user experience. JPW oversaw the entire process of this website redesign—through research, design, development, testing and launch.

The solution

  • Strategy sessions to gather input on the needs of the website, including feedback sessions for refinement of the proposed design

  • Wireframe mockup of the site

  • Design mockup of the site

  • Programming of the site

  • Delivery of a style guide memorializing fonts and web colors

  • Delivery of a GitHub repository containing tested website code to successfully deploy on Netlify

  • The assistance of deployment and technical support following site launch

The reward

The mayor revealed the microsite during the unveiling of the City’s annual strategic plan. The website now provides residents with the goals the City plans to achieve and resources to track real-time progress showing how each goal is being fulfilled. With the new site, the mayor’s priority is to show residents how government leaders are supporting the regional economy; improving infrastructure; implementing homelessness solutions; as well as providing equitable access to libraries, parks, public safety services and climate equity.
