We’re hiring:
Multimedia designer

Great design at JPW makes complex information easier to understand, captures attention and helps public agencies connect meaningfully with the communities they serve.

We’re looking for a multimedia designer who brings strategic thinking and creative curiosity to a wide range of print, digital and multimedia work. You’ll design everything from brands, campaigns and websites to presentations, social content and public outreach materials. Working closely with strategists, communicators and clients, you’ll turn ideas and intricate information into thoughtful, engaging creative that serves a clear purpose.

We’re looking for more than someone who can execute a brief. Our ideal designer can explain the why behind a creative decision, confidently recommend a better direction when needed and help clients see how strong design can make their communication more effective.

If you love thoughtful design, interesting problems and work that actually gets used out in the world, keep reading.

As a multimedia designer at JPW, you’ll:

  • Design a wide range of print and digital deliverables across multiple platforms that enhance our clients’ reputations within their communities.

  • Turn intricate information into clear, compelling visual communication that makes it easier for people to understand and appreciate.

  • Develop creative concepts in collaboration with project teams and confidently present the thinking behind your recommendations.

  • Blend photography, illustration, infographics, typography and multimedia elements to create high-impact designs.

  • Manage revisions and client feedback while managing exceptions and working within established budgets and timelines.

  • Serve as a trusted design advisor to clients and internal teams, translating design principles into accessible, non-technical language.

  • Ensure creative work consistently reflects client brand standards, project objectives and production best practices.

  • Prepare approved deliverables for production and coordinate with vendors as needed.

  • Maintain organized, repeatable processes for developing and managing creative deliverables.

  • Help bring the JPW brand to life across our website, social media, e-newsletter, proposals and other owned channels.

  • Help non-designers create better work by providing guidance, templates and feedback that maintain quality and brand consistency.

  • Manage multiple projects, clients, deadlines and budgets without sacrificing the details that make good work great.

  • Maintain an annual billable target of 1,500 hours or more.

  • Take on other responsibilities as the role and company evolve.

Our best designers are people who:

  • Are curious about problems before jumping to solutions.

  • Care as much about whether something works as whether it looks good.

  • Can take a complicated idea and make it feel simple.

  • Welcome feedback without becoming an order-taker.

  • Know when to push creatively and when consistency matters more.

  • Can move between very different brands, audiences and assignments without losing the thread.

  • Notice the tiny details other people miss.

  • Are organized enough to make creativity work in a fast-moving agency environment.

  • Take ownership, communicate early and figure things out.

We're looking for someone who brings:

  • Bachelor’s degree in graphic design or a related field.

  • 2–5+ years of professional graphic design experience; agency experience is preferred.

  • A strong portfolio demonstrating thoughtful design across print and digital media.

  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly PowerPoint and Word. Yes, great design sometimes happens in PowerPoint.

  • Strong understanding of design principles, color theory, layout and typography.

  • Knowledge of accessibility standards and the ability to design within ADA accessibility guidelines.

  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.

  • Excellent attention to detail.

  • Confidence communicating creative recommendations and rationale to both internal teams and clients.

  • An interest in learning about our clients, their audiences and the communities behind the work.

Experience working with public agencies is a plus, but it’s not required. If you’re a strong designer who is curious, strategic and excited about doing meaningful work, we’d still love to hear from you.

Why JPW:

We’re not interested in creating beautiful things just for the sake of creating beautiful things. Our work needs to work.

Our clients are cities, water agencies, transportation organizations and other community-building organizations that tackle real challenges that affect real communities. That means our designers get to work on an unusually wide range of projects and subject matter from community brands and public outreach campaigns to emergency communications, economic development, infrastructure and everything in between.

You’ll be part of a collaborative team where designers have a voice in the strategy, good ideas can come from anywhere and thoughtful creative is an important part of how we solve problems.

If you’re looking for a role where you can stretch creatively, sharpen your strategic thinking and see your work make its way into communities across California, we’d love to meet you.
